Equipment & Safety Policy

Equipment Guidelines

Your gear – firearm, magazines, belts, load-bearing gear and ammunition –  should be in good condition and ready-to-go prior to the class. We suggest students bring a backup firearm – including required accessories – to class. Maintenance and service of your firearm during the class is the sole responsibility of the student. OpSpec Training staff are not able to provide service for your gun during the class.

Instructors will not delay the class if an individual student is having a mechanical issue with their firearm.

For OpSpec Training programs at SIG Sauer Academy in New Hampshire, the academy offers free use of firearms, magazines, holsters and mag pouches to students. If there is an issue, we swap out the equipment.

In general, OpSpec Training does not suggest the 1911 platform for high-round count classes. We’ve seen inherent reliability issues with the platform, and we want you to get the most value from the class without having to worry about equipment breakdowns.

Safety

OpSpec Training starts each morning and afternoon session with a safety and medical briefing. Our instructional staff reviews the Four Cardinal Rules of Firearm Safety, as well as the three conditions when – and only when – the trigger can be operated. We take safety on the line – as well as off the line and in the parking lot – seriously. We expect students to do the same.

Students should be very familiar with the function, operation and safety features of their gun. This includes operation of DA/SA pistols with de-cockers and SA pistols with manual safeties. Students must also be comfortable with safe and correct loading and unloading procedures. Remember, there is never a race to the holster.

Students who display a gun-handling safety issue during class will be provided instructor counseling as appropriate. Students who display multiple safety issues while operating their firearm will be politely dismissed from the class, without a refund.

Instructors will not delay the class if an individual student is being counseled concerning safety or operation of their firearm.

Multi-Day Classes

For our three to five day classes, you must have a pistol with at least a 13-round magazine capacity. We understand some states have 10-round limits, and we can work within those limits within those states.
