Applied Fundamentals Carbine
If you’re an intermediate shooter, competitor, or law enforcement officer looking to improve your carbine skills at speed, the three-day Applied Fundamentals is the accelerated program for you. The class focuses on mental planning as a method to run your rifle at speed in a variety of conditions.
You’ll be shooting approximately 1,300 to 1,500 rounds during the intensive three-day program. This is not a course for a beginner.
Applied Fundamentals Carbine
The goal of Applied Fundamentals Carbine (Rifle) is to take the building blocks shooters have learned in Practical Fundamentals or other trigger control-based programs and learn to apply those skills methodically to solve shooting problems.
Too often, shooters have mental knowledge and physical skill sets that they struggle to demonstrate or employ under stress, or, when presented with unfamiliar shooting scenarios, they “fail to perform.” This program addresses this issue directly.
Shooters will be exposed to an intensive, highly focused series of exercises with very specific goal sets. Applied Rifles’ one-on-one instructor-student structure allows our instructional staff to systematically address shooter’s physical (weapons handling) deficiencies and overcome the mental obstacles within their paths.
This is not a basic class. Prospective students should come in with a solid understanding of firearms safety, gun handling, and shooting skills. The course is structured and laid out in a manner that will be as mentally challenging as it is physically. Information will be chunked and repeated in a manner proven to accelerate physical and cognitive skills.
Participants will be exposed to the methods top athletes use to learn and engrain new skills. Shooters will not just see improvement, they will, more importantly, be given a language that will allow them to understand how that improvement was achieved and how it can be further enhanced. The sky is the limit. The structure of Applied Fundamentals will help remove the obstacles to your success both during and after class has wrapped.
If you are prepared for a lot of hard work and constant-one on-one feedback, come see what Applied Fundamentals has to offer.

They train toward precision
I have taken more than a dozen courses at various training facilities. But less purposeful practice from generalist instructor tips does not produce the kind of performance I want. Op Spec is not a generalist training group, they train toward precision, breaking the shooter’s less effective habits down and rebuilding them with clear understanding of purpose. I will save my training dollars and wait for any person on their team to put on a course.
Definitely recommended

Strengthens good technical marksmanship
Jerry makes you shoot better, no matter where your skill level is when you start. This class is exactly what the name says; it strengthens good technical marksmanship. It isn’t about tactics or competition, but the improvement in shooting skills will then serve to improve performance in whatever shooting discipline the student practices.
I wouldn’t change a thing
The class is great. I wouldn’t change a thing. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
OpSpec Training teaches the student to pull the trigger without disturbing the sights better than any other program I know of.
Loved the mental aspect
Best pistol class I have ever taken. Loved the mental aspect of the training and getting out of my own head. Harold knows his stuff. He brought skills that go beyond just shooting to the class.
It’s a system that can work
It’s a system that can work regardless of a shooter’s experience level.
Amazing class
Amazing class. Go in with an open mind and you WILL be successful. The mechanics you develop in this class will allow you to be the best shooter you can be and can be applied to everything you do moving forward. I’ll be taking this class again.
A superb course
Applied Fundamentals is a superb course teaching the technique of drawing a pistol from the holster and accurately shooting. The instructors are excellent with the class size small enough so there is a great deal of one on one instruction.
The class also stresses the ultimate goal of safe pistol handling, the students are always managed with this in mind and teach this concept throughout the 3 days of the course.
I am ready for the next course
HR had the swagger to keep everyone’s attention. Only to back it up at the middle and end of the course. His team – Steve, Tony and Blake were exceptional in analysis, remedy, and encouragement.
With the practice of the concepts that HR communicated, I am confident that my skills will improve consistently.
I am ready for the next course.

I experienced a measurable improvement
This was excellent training. Very true to the description on the website.
I really appreciated that we focused on skills and techniques that are truly the building blocks of any further training that we may undertake. We didn’t just do a bunch of “cool stuff” that might feel impressive at the time, but not serve in “real world” situations or help us build our abilities in the future.
I experienced a measurable improvement in skill and confidence and essential tools to practice with on my own. Highly recommended.
Will take you to the next level
If you want to master your trigger, this is the type of methodology that will take you to the next level once you have mastered it.
This coursework is a well-structured system
I feel that this class will be beneficial to essentially anyone that desires to shoot a handgun with greater safety, accuracy and speed. Regardless of your level of experience, developing masterful trigger control is the goal and this coursework is a well-structured system taught by guys that have the skills to move you forward.
My time and money were well spent
Excellent class. HR and his associate instructors have demonstrably invested a great deal of thought, skill and enthusiasm into their product, resulting in a great learning experience for all participating students, irrespective of skill level.
Emphasis on the implementation of the fundamental principles of shooting (reset-prep-confirm-roll, along with their other requisite components) is applicable to all of my current and future training. My time and money were well spent. Highly recommended.
Great class
Great class, with lots of detail to trigger prep. Helped me a lot to slow down, and concentrate on the prep. It will make me a better shooter, with more accuracy. Lots to take away from ,with slowing down before jumping on the gas pedal.
I truly appreciate all they gave during this three-day course
This was my second time taking the course and although it served somewhat as a refresher l still gained more valuable knowledge about my weaknesses and more importantly how to go about correcting them.
HR and his coaches immediately impressed us with their professionalism, knowledge and ability. They are leaders to who one gives their full attention and respect. I truly appreciate all they gave during this three-day course.
I would not change a thing
I was looking for a class that would help me improve my shooting from the ground up. I found exactly what I was looking for. The focus on trigger prep and applying it to different situations cemented the concept and the feel of what I am supposed to be doing firmly into my mind.
Each of the instructors – HR, Steve, Tony and Blake – had a different approach to the material which made learning. I was very happy with the organized, step-by-step method which kept the information being presented from becoming overwhelming. Although it sounds like a cliche, I would not change a thing.
That is best demonstrated by the fact that I would happily take the course again because I know I would get even more out of it the second time.
Learned plenty
Had many “Ah ha, that’s why it’s done this way moments.”
Incredible instructor
HR is an incredible instructor. His passion for his student’s improvement is obvious.
Loved the mental aspect of the training
Best pistol class I have ever taken. Loved the mental aspect of the training and getting out of my own head. Harold knows his stuff. He brought skills that go beyond just shooting to the class.
Best class I’ve taken to date
Prep more, suck less! The best class I’ve taken to date. Coach HR developed a training program that delivers results. His ability to break down the concept of trigger control and effectively present it to shooters of different proficiency levels is unparalleled. The one-on-one instruction along with the coach’s additional input will not allow one to go through the motions of pulling the trigger. This three-day course requires you to follow the methodology and keep your focus, if you can do that, good results will follow. The technique and drills taught are easily transferred to practice at home with both dry and live fire. Take this course from OpSpec Training and you will NOT be disappointed!
All four instructors want you to be a better shooter
All four instructors want you to be a better shooter taking the time to analyze every shot you took. On a personal note, HR is the best and he really pushed me with the exercises in class and correcting my bad habits and shooting style from years of poor instruction.
I very strongly recommend this class
I very strongly recommend this class to any shooter that wants to take their skill to the next level. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been shooting for 1 year or 40 years, everyone leaves a much better shooter with a whole new level of understanding trigger control.
Take your skills to the next level
HR and his assistants Steve and Alan provide you with the opportunity to take your skills to the next level. You will work hard and push yourself to be successful. Great instruction delivered in an entertaining and clear manner. regardless of where you were at prior to the course, you will walk away with more knowledge, insight and capability than when you started.
Not just a “have fun” on the range class
This class is a great learning experience where the students will not just learn technique, but also a wealth of knowledge. This class is not just a “have fun” on the range class. This is straight forward no non-sense learning experience on trigger control techniques. If you are serious on improving your skills, and welcome instructor feedback that will make you better, this is the class for you. This class will mostly be enjoyed by serious shooters, who are looking to greatly improve their abilities.
Can’t wait to take another
Great class. The guys were incredibly knowledgeable. Learned a ton about trigger control and had a great time. Can’t wait to take another.
The results speak for themselves
OpSpec Training’s Practical Fundamentals course is a the best class I know of for a beginning pistol shooter. Being able to move the trigger without disturbing the sights is the foundation that all other skills are built upon. OpSpec Training rightly focuses the majority of the course on teaching this skill. The results speak for themselves. At the end of the class each of the students was able to hit a target the width of a playing card at 7 yards, some on their first shot.
Theory was well integrated into application
The Op Spec instructors ensured individual attention to not only address any and all questions but also to ensure complete understanding of the principles being taught. Humor, relevant stories, and a complete lack of bravado made everyone equal in the training to bring everyone up from the level they entered the course. Theory was well integrated into application for a fuller comprehension of not only the what, but more importantly the why. This was a great training team with Bruce, Howard, Doug and Jordan!
I’d definitely recommend this specific training
This was a fantastic class that measurably enhanced my skills. The instructors were focused on maintaining safety while providing an effective environment for learning. Based on this experience, I’d definitely recommend this specific training and OpSpecTraining as a provider.
The instructors are top notch
I’ve really enjoyed the classes I attended with OpSpec training. I’ve taken several over the past few years with multiple instructors and have always found value in the content and what I learned. The instructors are top notch, the material is focused and the day is always fun. I’ll certainly be back for more.
I shot extremely tight groups
I have taken this class or an advanced class several times. The skills they have taught me are finally becoming engrained in my brain. I shot extremely tight groups.
Thank you all, may I have another?
Awesome class, great instructors and instruction. Learned so much during this class. I took marksmanship class at SIG Sauer Academy, your class was far superior. Bruce and Harold knocked the cover off. Thank you all, may I have another?
The staff was first rate
Best class I’ve ever taken! This class will definitely help take me to the next level! Look out here I come! The staff was first rate! A great group of people! Highly experienced!
Attention to detail can add years of experience without the years
This class is the greatest class for the shooter who wants to improve him or herself. The attention to detail can add years of experience without the years. You will become a better shooter. Their experience in gun handling, training currently in another past and projected future abilities to help each student do better is unsurpassed if haven’t taken a class from these people you should.
Your money is well spent and you get a dramatic return on your investment, something that you can’t buy. Their years of experience make them the go-to firm for training.
So simple, yet profound!
This class helped me understand the detailed process in 10ths of a second that comes into making a good draw and a great shot in a way that I had not seen before. It made clear where I can accelerate and where I can apply more time to make a fast and accurate shot. So simple, yet profound!
I wish I had this training 25 years ago
I have 25 plus years in firearms, prior military (three mid-east combat deployments), over 20 years of law enforcement with the last 10 being a trainer. I wish I had this training 25 years ago. Single best class ever!
Simple concept executed flawlessly, resulted in the most improvement and in the shortest time. I reduced group size 50%-60% in both “slow” and “individual shots” fired fast.
I left a much better shooter
This class broke down the fundamentals of shooting in a way I have not had anybody explain before. However that does not mean this is a basic course. I have been shooting a long time and have taken a variety of training and this helped tie much of that together in a very practical and useful way.
I left a much better shooter then when I went in and I had a great time.
Instructors were excellent
Excellent class. I definitely improved while in the class. Also learned new techniques I can practice at home that will further improve my shooting. Recommend this class with no reservations.
Instructors were excellent. They saw everything and were quick with helpful pointers to improve technique. Excellent explanations. The instructions for the drills were very clear.
Opportunity for one-on-one instruction
Very good class, excellent instruction, [and] application of the fundamentals – especially trigger control. Set up drills in a way to break up the monotony of the usual “line” plus giving greater opportunity for one-on-one instruction.
I met my goals and then some
Emmitt and Jerry were very professional and their knowledge and skill sets for teaching this block of instruction was more than adequate. I do not know what they could have done to better the class except perhaps, finding a range that was closer to the parking lot.
I served in the special ops community for more than 21 years and am currently a law enforcement officer. I have taken many shooting classes over the years and consider myself not only an above average instructor but a better than average shooter. I had hoped to gain some new skill sets to bring back to my agency as well as become an even more effective shooter and instructor. Well, I met my goals and then some.
The MOAC course did not disappoint. I recommend this course to any serious shooter looking to advance their skill sets. This course is not meant for the novice shooter, or any shooter that can’t meet the prerequisites.
Did I mention trigger control?
This class stresses trigger control and trigger control and well, did I mention trigger control? It will make you a more accurate shooter by stressing trigger control and instilling confidence in your ability to make accurate hits under stress.
Improvements made during class exceeded my expectations
I took Practical Fundamentals for a second time after completing the course the first time about five years ago. While the premise of the course was the same there were nuanced differences that made it more than worthwhile. The improvements made during class exceeded my expectations. I have very clear practice drills and exercises that will continue me along my journey.
Instructors were very attentive
Instructors were very attentive to work on improving my shooting skills and addressing the bad behaviors. Both Jerry and Troy were committed to work with me improving my skills and dexterity to shoot better. I like it very much specially because it is a very process oriented class where the results came as I understood and improved on each step of the process of breaking a shot. Prep, confirm, roll.
It is really a great time spent at the range with great trigger time where you know that every shot will be meaningful to your learning and shooting skills development. I really saw a great difference for the better between start shooting on day one and finishing on day two.
Thoroughly enjoyed it
Thoroughly enjoyed it. The small class size was a pleasure. As always, the instructor, assistant and admin staff were all superior. Appreciated the flexibility and tailoring to the needs of the students.
Shooting ability dramatically increased
In a two day course my shooting ability dramatically increased and I took things from this class I can use to help others become better shooters when I become a firearms instructor and join the law enforcement community.
Ability to pass on his knowledge is incomprehensible
I recently attended the Applied Fundamentals class with HR Hawkins. The depth of HR’s understanding of the subject matter, his awareness of what is happening on an unimaginable level and his ability to pass on his knowledge is incomprehensible.
Ultra-refined instruction on trigger control
The class to take if you want to become a better shooter. You will receive an ultra-refined instruction on trigger control that will result in immediate and significant improvement. Make every effort to take this class. OpSpec Training is light years ahead of other organizations in their approach to teaching trigger control and improved marksmanship.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course
HR and Troy were excellent instructors. Well informed, knowledgeable and skilled in pistol shooting. Took the stress of anticipation away by saying “there was nothing new to be learned” after the first hour. However, little gradual additions were made along the course so that realistically we performed much different “courses of fire” at the end than in the beginning.
I thoroughly enjoyed this course and would come to other Florida based courses limited to 3-3.5 days. Excellent.
The first time I have taken time to give a review of a class
I just finished a class last weekend at Okeechobee with HR and the team at OpSpec Training. Over the last 20 years I have been to more than 30 classes in four different states.
HR is one of the finest instructors I have had the pleasure of spending time with. He not only can handle a firearm very well and has the safest handling I have seen.
When I would call my wife during the class she wanted to know how safe it was this time. She was very happy to hear my report. Not only is he a great speaker, but for someone of his abilities to be able to slow down enough to teach people that are new to his teachings is incredible!
By the way, this is the first time I have taken time to give a review of a class.
Well structured and very well executed
Excellent. HR was extremely knowledgable, professional, polite and very focused on safety and first aid. Troy and Emmitt were very professional as well and great guys to boot.
An excellent class well structured and very well executed. Top notch instruction from top notch people. 5 stars all the way. I will be attending another class early next year. Thank you!
Individual improvement regardless of initial skill level
The one-on-one instruction over the course of three days and over 1,500 rounds allowed for individual improvement regardless of initial skill level. Highly recommended.
Every round you fire is watched
Don’t take this class if you only take courses for the cool “experience” or if you are sensitive about having your trigger work x-rayed by serious dudes. Every round you fire is watched… every frigging round. There is constant feedback when you’re shooting. That means there’s nowhere to hide and no way to switch off your brain and just cruise.
This is a 3-day exercise in mental discipline. It just so happens you have a gun in your hand. But if you keep engaged, you will get better. More importantly you’ll take away skills to help you diagnose and improve your shooting.
I got faster AND more accurate
From Day 1 to Day 3, I cut my score in half on the assessment drills. I got faster AND more accurate. A simple premise that we practice for three days and have confirmation at the end that we got better. Harold, Tony & Doug were awesome, each seeing different things in each of us and we got to work with all three.
Some very good drills
I would recommend this class to someone who wants to improve their pistol marksmanship. Some very good drills which were shown to us during our class. Definitely will practice those drills at my own range.
The class will be what you need
This class covered the underlying details of trigger reset and recoil management quite well. It will be a good class if you wish to improve in IDPA and/or steel plate.
The class will be what you need and not necessarily what you had wanted!
An excellent course
An excellent course for learning or refreshing trigger control skills. Really helped with time to first shot when drawing from a holster. I was initially skeptical about “process oriented” skills but now I think it’s a very useful way to train for fast and accurate shooting.
A good foundation that I can build upon
The Practical Fundamentals class taught by Jerry Jones is well worth taking regardless of whether you’re a beginning shooter or an old hand.
Before taking the class, I didn’t really know what the fundamentals were. Taking the class gave me a good foundation that I can build upon at home. Highly recommended!
Structured drills to emphasize the fundamentals
Practical Fundamentals just wrapped up here in San Antonio (March, 2019). This class doesn’t promise some fancy new ultra secret pistol technique. It uses structured drills to emphasize the fundamentals and really show you where you are weakest. That is the most important thing I took away from this class.
They show you drills that apply directly (or can be adapted) to help whichever part of your technique needs work – trigger control, draw to first shot, multiple shots, or transitions.
Highly recommended
Highly recommended. This class made definitely me a better shooter and, more importantly, taught me how to practice in order to keep getting better. Prep, Confirm, Roll!
Really took my game up a notch!
Overall, I gained a much better understanding of the nuances associated with shooting proficiently. Really took my game up a notch!
Totally changed the way I approach a target and process the shot
The class allowed me to visualize and better understand the fundamentals through many drills and invaluable feedback from the instructors. It totally changed the way I approach a target and process the shot.
Top two classes that I have ever taken
Probably in the top two classes that I have ever taken. I pretty much liked everything about the class and especially HR, he was excellent. He and Steve were always positive and reassuring vs others that I have had that were degrading and negative. The knowledge imparted was terrific!
I got everything I wanted from the class
I got everything I wanted from the class. Marked improvement, drills that I can take home, and simple, down to earth answers.
Start to finish a great experience
Start to finish a great experience. Take this class and diagnose why you are shooting more slowly and less accurately than you should. OpSpec Training will give you the fixes; it is up to you to continue when you leave class.
In my opinion there is no better instruction to be had. When you leave you will know exactly why you pulled a shot and you will know how to correct on the next.
I absolutely can’t ask for more from a class
I came home with about 20 specific improvements I need to make, and I have practical drills that I know how to use to help me improve in each. I absolutely can’t ask for more from a class than that. I would recommend this class to anyone serious about improving their shooting.
HR and Steve were both fantastic. They were both knowledgeable, willing and able to explain the material, and they were consistent.
Provided the tools and insight to shoot well
Everybody can shoot a gun … it’s just a matter of how well. The Practical Fundamentals course provided the tools and insight to shoot well. With heavy focus put on to some basic fundamentals, it is those that are reconfirmed to be the building blocks of shooting well that come up over and over again through the weekend. It is all a matter of how well you think about those fundamentals and apply them to advanced scenarios.
HR and Steve were great. While many classes can feel like you’re drinking from a fire hose everything here was well presented. Explanations, dry fire, demos, SLOW DEMOs (because boy can HR blaze) demos of doing it wrong, more explanations, and live fire.
Can’t help but make you a better shooter
The Practical Fundamental class is a great way to improve your practical shooting skills, no matter your level of expertise. The OpSpec Training staff provided a training environment and process that can’t help but make you a better shooter.
My accuracy improved tremendously
As a self taught shooter I had several bad habits. The Practical Fundamentals class gave me a good, solid foundation on which to improve my pistol shooting skills. For someone at my level it was like drinking from a fire hose but I took good notes and now have several drills to use to ingrain new, better habits.
My accuracy improved tremendously while actually increasing the speed at which I put rounds on target.
Each day was carefully planned
This was the best MOAC to date. Each day was carefully planned. Skills learned one day were put to use and built upon the next. The availability of one-to-one instructing both on the shooting line and off was the best I have seen.
The instructor to student ratio…
The instructor to student ratio was much better than other classes I’ve attended anywhere. Having three instructors and the host who was an instructor that also participated in the class to 10 students was really helpful.
Perhaps the best feature was that the five days allowed me to better absorb everything, and go at my pace until they became second nature, without trying to keep up with the faster shooters.
I definitely recommend this class.
I can’t say enough about the instructors
This class was transformational. I was able ti increase my shooting ability in one week more than years of training and many classes with other instructors.
I can’t say enough about the instructors…first class all the way!
Take. This. Class.
Take. This. Class. Do you think you’re a good pistol shooter? Accurate? Fast? Guess what, you are probably nowhere near to reaching your potential. Do you know what to practice and how to get better? I thought I did, but I was woefully incorrect.
I’ve been shooting for a long time and I cannot remember a course that fundamentally advanced my shooting accuracy and speed with a pistol. The team revealed “gaps in my game” and worked with me to correct them (and got me over the hump of personal frustration with deconstructing thirty years of ingrained mental/physical processes).
This class will deconstruct and re-train the mechanical aspects of your trigger control — and it will do it enough times that you demonstrate significant progress during the class. Also, it will give you the tools to continue to up your game after the class. All you have to do is leave your ego at home and play a little game.
A complete game changer
This class was a complete game changer. It forced me to actually track and understand what I was doing as I was doing it. This allowed me much more control over my shooting. This class gave me what I have been looking for over these last seven years. If you have any opportunity to take this class, you absolutely should.
This was a great class
This was a great class. 5 Stars.
Three thousand rounds were fired, none of them wasted
The brilliance of the teaching methodology gradually revealed itself throughout the course. Each series of shots fired began with shouldering and prepping the rifle, confirming proper sight placement and making a controlled trigger roll. This constant repetition of proper technique with short strings of rapid shots greatly improved my ability to get the first shot and multiple subsequent shots on target faster than I ever have.
Three thousand rounds were fired, none of them wasted.
As a retired soldier, I came to the course with some degree of knowledge related to the use of the AR-15 system; Jerry took that basic competence and turned it into confidence.
I have had a lot of shooting instruction. Jerry’s style is the style that I like best; firm, polite, humble, and doesn’t make the shooters feel bad about themselves. He just meets them where they are and makes them better.
Hands down, I left the class as a better shooter
As a LEO firearms instructor, this course offered a change of pace that I needed, being a student again. While the course title states that it is an advanced class, it offers a much needed return to the basics, which can be applied in any scenario. After all, an advanced technique is the proper application of a basic technique. Hands down, I left the class as a better shooter.
Highly recommend this course to others in my department
Advanced Pistol Marksmanship took the way I look at training and practice to the next level. I loved the way Jerry and Harold complimented each other – different styles, both saying the same thing, but differently, really allowed points to be driven home. I would highly recommend this course to others in my department.
Take this class
If you truly want to improve you shooting skills take this class.
The course is both challenging and rewarding
Applied Fundamentals provides the advanced level of instruction needed to prepare the student for action shooting competition, with focus and training on both the physical and mental levels. The course is both challenging and rewarding, and upon completion the student demonstrates significant improvement, while obtaining knowledge and guidance for establishing their own future training sessions to support continued development.
Best bang for my buck, hands down
Just finished three days of Applied Fundamentals. You can throw money at training anytime. But, if you’re going to spend the money choose to invest in yourself by training with OpSpec. HR Hawkins and Jerry Jones are truly gifted communicators in breaking it all down into incremental steps, resulting in huge gains in not only skill, but in understanding the how and why of it all.
Best bang for my buck, hands down. Thanks, OpSpec, I’ll be back.
Amazing instructor
HR is an amazing instructor, and his unique approach to analyzing problems and training is truly a gift. I’m sure there is no one else teaching it this way, unless they got it from HR. Even then, I’m not sure they could teach it as well. He seemed to be always observing and processing, pointing out not only errors while we were shooting, but even spotting errors during warmup or visualization that would lead to errors while shooting.
This is training I could’ve used thirty years ago
This is training I could’ve used thirty years ago. The entire weekend was focused on one thing and one thing only – trigger control. I’ve always known I wasn’t doing things exactly the way I should be, but never had it broken down for me. Now I have. And every bit as importantly, I now have the tools going forward to self-diagnose.
Provided me the tools to become a better competitive and tactical shooter
Anyone can shoot fast and most of us can shoot accurate but shooting fast and accurate while changing positions and sight pictures is a totally different thing. Applied Fundamentals provided me the tools to become a better competitive and tactical shooter.
This is the one
If you are searching for a course that will give you the tools to become a better shooter, regardless of your experience level, this is the one. You may not be better by the time you finish the course, but you will have the knowledge and tools to take with you, to apply during your training for months and years afterwards. That’s when you WILL become better.
I’ve learned techniques and drills that I know I will be using for the rest of my life.
They will make you a better shooter
Everyone who carries a gun should learn these techniques. They will make you a better shooter.
Experienced shooters will also benefit from this class
An excellent class that takes you from seeing your target, acquiring it and the trigger control necessary to accurately place a shot on it. Experienced shooters will also benefit from this class.
Picked up several new things from this class
I picked up several new things from this class that helped my shooting tremendously. In particular, the dry fire drill that Harold taught doing reps of the trigger pull and getting back to reset is something I really needed so that I stop slapping the trigger when I’m running below .33 splits.
I definitely left the class a better shooter
Great class that concentrated on the basics… the fundamentals. These skills can be overlooked, but are key to becoming a better and more consistent shooter. I definitely left the class a better shooter with a better mindset.
While some students may find that all the dry fire drills are long when they’d rather be shooting with live ammo, those dry fire drills were key to developing the skills I wanted during the class and giving me practical skills to apply after.
Instructors were excellent with great attitudes that made the class enjoyable while still dealing with a serious and sober subject.
Just enough pressure to motivate you
Bruce and his team (Steve, Harold and Doug) were outstanding instructors. The class was exceptional. I now have the information and tools I need to improve my trigger control in a way I never have before. The pace was great and the drills were excellent. Just enough pressure to motivate you while also providing encouragement.
A wonderful opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business
The most important aspect of this class was the quality of the instruction provided. Bruce, Harold, Doug and Steve were always engaged with what the students were doing and provided thorough and thoughtful advice at all times. Safety was paramount and driven hard throughout the entire two-day program. Every question was answered in a polite and comprehensive manner. Bruce especially was always gracious and appreciative of the input students provided and the fact that the class was well attended.
A wonderful opportunity to learn from some of the best in the business. My trigger is my new found friend! The smoothness and accuracy of my entire shot process improved dramatically over the two-day program and I now have an effective dry-fire routine to keep my skills at a high level. Thank you Bruce Gray and the entire OpSpec training team!
I never felt uncomfortably pressured
Bruce, Harold and Steve were excellent in their rolls. I never felt uncomfortably pressured to execute your lessons, you all are very courteous and kind.
I am very much looking forward to taking Practical Fundamentals again in the future and likely other classes from OpSpec.
Enjoyed the reload drills with increasing time pressure
Very safe and well run class. Very good instructor to student information provided in a professional and helpful manner.
Would like to see a bit more drills involving movement in a class such as this. Movement introduces lots of important variables that impact the shooters accuracy and gun handling, so this would be a nice addition.
Enjoyed the reload drills with increasing time pressure. Greatly enhanced my confidence in doing well executed magazine changes under pressure either in competition or in a real-life shooting situation.
All the instructors were best in class and provided great advice and clear information. Questions were always welcomed and answered fully.
A thoughtful approach to trigger control
Great class. Provides a thoughtful approach to trigger control that teaches you how to improve in the mechanics and the thought process of shooting. Highly recommended.
Really benefitted from the thought process approach and the drills for future practice. Bruce, Harold and Steve were excellent teachers. I particularly felt Harold’s approach helped me the most along with Bruce’s introduction to the mechanics and process.
Instructors are excellent
The OpSpec Training instructors are excellent. It was a real treat to learn once again from the master: Bruce Gray, along with Doug, Steve, and Harold.
Perfect balance
Perfect balance of speed and accuracy emphasis.
I would categorize the class as phenomenal
I am a full-time firearms trainer for a major law enforcement agency in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The class I took was the Practical Fundamentals pistol class taught by Jerry Jones and HR Hawkins. Both instructors were very polished and able to teach to all levels of firearms experience in the class.
I would categorize the class as phenomenal and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to bring their shooting to a new level. I am looking forward to taking more classes from OpSpec Training and hopefully bring them out to my agency’s range as guest instructors.
Enjoyed the drills breaking down to the smallest detail
Jerry and Harold were phenomenal and interesting. I enjoyed the real world stories/experiences intertwined with our training. Made it seem more important WHY we were doing things.
Having an engineering background, I totally enjoyed the drills breaking down to the smallest detail and encouraging us to evaluate ourselves to determine where we thought we needed work. It’s the “teach a man to fish…” philosophy which I will find beneficial to all my future shooting endeavors.
Graduate-level trigger control school
Graduate-level trigger control school. After this class, I am absolutely committed to working that hard prep and get better. This class has renewed me and taken me out of my training rut.
Moved a pace that was appealing and useful
Class great and moved a pace that was appealing and useful to shooters of all levels.
Safety was always a priority
Jerry and his staff were great with instruction and demonstration. Some great application taught from the LE world to the competitive shooter. Safety was always a priority!
Ended up being Most Accurate
I took Practical Fundamentals in June 2017. I knew it was a great course then, and have been putting in some work since. I hadn’t been able to shoot an IDPA event since before your class (wife & kids, etc…). Anyway, I got out there last weekend to shake the rust off and ended up being Most Accurate.
I know this achievement was due in large part to the instruction Jerry and Harold shared with us. Just thought you should share in this little success.
Packed with little tricks that enhanced my shooting
The training cadre and material was fantastic. The varying view points with instructors coming from competition backgrounds and law enforcement backgrounds added to the learning experience. I liked the way principals were explained in easy, logical ways. Jerry, Harold and Annette all came across as extremely knowledgeable but entirely approachable.
Having taken dozens of training courses, I can say that I have never attended a class so packed with little tricks that enhanced my shooting. I left with clear practicing instructions and after I practice them for a while, I intend to take the class again to further refine the techniques.
Instructors were fantastic
Instructors were fantastic, and worked well together. Jerry and Harold played off each other really well, alternating instructions and explanations in a way that really drove home the concepts we were learning. The humor thrown in with the seriousness and safety consciousness really made the weekend enjoyable.
Instructors were interesting, well-versed, and very professional
By taking the class I learned what I really didn’t know. I now will be relearning some basic fundamentals to improve my shooting. The class was extremely well executed from a safety standpoint. After progressing to the multiple shots, it would be valuable to move back to the basics occasionally. I found myself reverting back to my old habits.
I now have the basics to practice and improve myself. The instructors were interesting, well-versed, and very professional. As Arnie said, “I’ll be back.”
I get it now!
What a great class, my views on my own dry firing and range practicing has completely changed for the better. I now have a better understanding on how to correct my bad habits. I get it now! I’m just an average Joe conceal-carry person in a class full of law enforcement personnel. I didn’t feel or was treated any different. 5 out of 5 stars.
I doubled my performance between the start and end of this course
This class exceeded my expectations. The training I received set me on the path to developing a strong foundation for my shooting skills. I doubled my performance between the start and end of this course – outstanding.
I never would have accomplished so much on my own
This class is a definite “must take.” In just two days time, my skills have improved exponentially. I never would have accomplished so much on my own. Thank you OpSpec for this opportunity!
Very professional!
All the instructors were great. Jerry and Harold so an awesome job explaining and breaking down the various skills. Very professional! Great class.
Looking forward to training with you all again
I would highly recommend this class to anyone wanting to build a strong foundation on trigger control. The method of teaching these principles is “where the money is.” I’m developing new, positive habits from what I learned from this class and will continue to grow as a better gunfighter as a result. Looking forward to training with you all again real soon.
My gun handling improved exponentially
Really fantastic. The course exceeded my expectations. My gun handling improved exponentially. The instructors were not only excellent, they were very decent, approachable, and positive people. That makes a big difference.
So much positive information
There was so much positive information provided during this intense two day course but the two key takeaways, for me, were the trigger bump practices and keying in and seeing the front sight bob or lift as you prepare for the subsequent shot.
A pretty common experience is that so often when aiming and just prior to firing, we tense in anticipation of the shot and often dip/drop the shot – the “let it happen” statement really hit home with me and resulted in incredible shots and subsequent follow-up round placements.
Thank you OpSpec – it was a pleasure.
Made a noticeable difference in my shooting skills!
It’s a great, highly educational, well thought out class with just enough instruction and live fire to keep your attention and interest throughout the day. Nothing seemed to drag on, and nothing seemed to move on too quickly.
It really made a noticeable difference in my shooting skills!
It was an awesome class
I really wasn’t sure what to expect. It was an awesome class and I am excited to continue my training and practice. Thanks.
I went into this training with high expectations due to the past testimonials and they were exceeded
I went into this training with high expectations due to the past testimonials and they were exceeded. Being basically self taught with the exception of basic firearm safety and handling exposure, I have a lot to unlearn.
While two days was not quite long enough to erase all my bad habits – I do see a path forward to continue to approve. The instructors were exceptional with the way they interacted with the group and individuals. My “aha moment” was the importance of dry firing and the how you can train realistically utilizing dry firing as the foundation.
Best course I have taken dealing with fundamentals in general and trigger management
This was my 10th training course, not including military and FLETC provided training. By far, this was the best course I have taken dealing with fundamentals in general and trigger management specifically. The level of detail in the demos and lecture explanations as to why certain techniques work better than others went far beyond any other course I have taken. This is an outstanding course to start your training year with to ensure you have the fundamental tools needed to get the most out of your shooting.
The class was filled with professionals and the instructors topped the list
I learned a great deal in a short time… but the pace was exactly what I needed not too fast but fast enough to keep me challenged.
The class was filled with professionals and the instructors topped the list. Thanks guys.
The one-on-one training was invaluable
I really enjoyed my three day course! The one-on-one training was invaluable to my progress. I am already planning to attend many more OpSpec Training classes, especially MOAC!
The OpSpec Training instructors were top notch
This was my third Operation Specific class after Practical Fundamentals and MOAC. Even though MOAC was billed as a high level class, I felt the Practical Fundamentals was more difficult because it focused solely on trigger reset and prep – in other words, the foundation for faster shooting. As we discussed in class, this is simple but not easy.
I would retake this class because it is the single most important skill I need to improve my shooting.
As usual, the Op Spec instructors were top notch.
The instructors were very helpful
The instructors were very helpful in explaining concepts and providing individualized feedback. Emphasis on safe gun handling skills, reloading on the timer and strong hand/weak hand shooting proved to be an important addition to the other training.
MOAC is the only course I will come to year after year
I have limited training dollars. I make it a point to do research on courses and spend my money wisely. In the last three years I have had the opportunity to train with some of the finest instructors.
MOAC is the only course I will come to year after year.
I would say that the OpSpec Training course (MOAC) is the BEST all around firearms course I have taken. The class incorporates the lost art of simply making sure you put your rounds on target.
This is my second year back and more then the curriculum, it was the staff that brought me back. The instructors come with top notch resumes and have the skill set to step up on the line and prove it. That’s what counts.
I would highly recommend you take these guys if you want to understand how to put rounds on target and above all have a great time, in a safe environment.
This class helped me learn how to shoot well
I’ve been to firearms instruction all over the country and no one can put all the mechanics of shooting together better than Jerry Jones. This class helped me learn how to shoot well and correct problems that may arise.
EVERY time I learn something new
This is my third trip to MOAC, and EVERY time I learn something new. The OpSpec crew does a fantastic job of bringing in new techniques or tweeks on existing techniques that make them easier to learn and incorporate into one’s shooting and dry practice. I noticed a big improvement in my shooting over the course of the week and I gained still more tools to drive it farther.
Shooting Bill Drills on 6″ plates at 50 yards strong hand only and support hand only and making a high percentage of the hits was a real eye opener. I’d highly recommend MOAC (or any OpSpec class for that matter) to anyone who is serious about moving their shooting forward.
Always feel the safest at OpSpec classes
Another great class from the folks at OpSpec. I’ve trained with many different instructors and always feel the safest at OpSpec classes. Firearm operation fundamentals are always stressed at OpSpec. A lot of classes I take end up being fun for shooting a bunch but OpSpec teaches the proper fundamentals and builds skills from there.
I ALWAYS leave the class with training routines I can take home and practice.
Opened my mind to a path to excellence
Brilliant class that opened my mind to a path to excellence. Gave the student a bridge to understand what the master knows and techniques to increase their own skills.
This was a great class
This was a great class that allowed me to tune up my fundamentals, and learn how to train in the future to continue to improve. Jerry Jones, my instructor broke down some concepts in a way that was more helpful than I was taught in the past.
… Well worth the money and the time and the slogging through the muck and mire of San Antonio. Thanks Jerry and Bruce. Well done.
The Steel Challenge plates on Sunday were are a really great way to combine presentation of concepts and practice for concepts already covered.
The coaching aspect of this class is a valuable tool. Good to see the students take lessons and apply them as a coach to help other shooters.
Worth far more than the price of admission
I attended the MOAC course in Mesa, Arizona. The course was an excellent value for the cost, and the takeaway worth far more than the price of admission. For many years any semblance of speed in my shooting was restricted to the time between one shot and when the sight picture returned to normal, before I could fire again. By the time the course was finished I was able to precisely control and observe sight movement in rapid firing and place shot strings in a small zone on the steel.
I became acutely aware of my own shortcomings as a shooter, and was provided the means to improve them, as well as drills and exercises for homework and to use as tools beyond the training in the months to come. Four instructors were present, all of whom gave excellent counsel, well placed critiques, and tips, pointers, training, lectures, and instruction that applied at the most fundamental level to help me as an individual. Class size was kept small, and it became quickly apparent that the instructors didn’t miss much, if anything. We were kept honest, and no one had an opportunity to rest on their laurels. Regardless of our backgrounds or skill levels entering the class, the instructor cadre worked hard to ensure that each student progressed in safety, handling, understanding, skill, speed, accuracy, presentation, technique, and procedure.
Emphasis throughout the program was on safety, with all basic safety policies, rules and procedures reviewed several times a day, as well as a medical briefing prior to every session, morning and afternoon. Safety was emphasized on the line as well as the loading area and classroom settings.
The class was not full of war stories, with just enough personal experience introduced to punctuate points, and a great deal of hands-on instruction. Instructors provided demonstrations, and emphasized learning by doing. Numerous timed drills were provided to allow students to measure their progress during the class.
The MOAC training is immensely beneficial to any shooter, whether military, law enforcement, competitor, or private carry or marksmanship. Every aspect of the training, which was logical and well organized, worked toward making the shooter better, safer, faster, and more efficient. I was excited to have the opportunity to attend the class, but came away more enthused and jazzed about what we covered and where I could go with it than when I went in.
The cost of the course, especially given travel, time off work, ammunition, tuition, equipment and other aspects, was not cheap, but well worth the investment. I have no reservations about recommending OpSpec Training, or the instructors who presented the material, and suggest that anyone seeking to improve their shooting, regardless of discipline or profession, avail themselves of the classes. I will be attending more.
Simunition training is exceptionally valuable to responsible concealed carry holders. Furthermore, Jerry Jones and his team offer formidable instruction and guidance throughout the curriculum. I look forward to returning for continuing education.
Before this course my shooting was inconsistent at best, and sometimes just flat out terrible. The light came on during the course, and my shooting improved dramatically. I’ve made this my pledge: “I will see the sights, I will feel the trigger, I will call my shot.” Thanks for helping me put it all together.
I learned quite a bit from this course and have picked up many new skills that I feel confident that I can practice and develop on my own. Because of the broad range of skill sets taught in this course, I will likely re-take it again in the next year or two.
I could see my accuracy improving, hour by hour, as the class progressed. I didn’t expect that, to be honest. Bruce’s tips on mental attitude and thoughts on trigger prep were invaluable. Harold gave me a lot of input on the technical aspects of what I was doing. Between the two of them, I somehow improved noticeably, during the first day.
Excellent, safe instructors with a tremendous amount of firearms knowledge. I would recommend anyone who owns or carries a firearm to take the Pistol CQB class. It opened my eyes to how to look for the deadly angles in your home. I completely changed my home defense plan based on this class.
The instructors complemented each other
The teaching methods utilized were very comprehensive. This was the first time that trigger control was taught as a process. The emphasis and importance put on dry firing was invaluable.
It was nice to have an explanation when teaching different techniques rather than “just do it this way.” The instructors complemented each other which made the course content more valuable and understandable. Excellent course and content, excellent teaching and excellent instructors.
The instructors have real world experience
The instructors have real world experience and are able to appropriately diagnose shooter issues quickly and match the shooters skill needed for that individuals job or mission.
Very knowledgeable and patient
Jerry and HR are both very knowledgeable and patient. They don’t mind repeating the same point over or use a parable to illustrate the point.
I unlearned all the bad habits I’ve gotten from 22 years of being in the NYPD.
Made me a more confident shooter.
Instructors are clear in their directions and then constantly by your side
This course offers a different way to learn the art of shooting. It focuses on the process which will ultimately lead to superior accuracy and speed. The instructors are clear in their directions and then constantly by your side to offer tips and methods to accomplish the next step. Although I have taken numerous others classes this one would be my #1 suggestion to family and friends.
I had a great time!
I really enjoyed the class and got a lot more out of it than I expected. When I first called about the class I was a little hesitant because I thought that I would be in over my head, and that I wasn’t going to be a good enough shooter to keep up. But the guy on the phone was great and convinced me that the class was just what I was looking for to try to increase my speed in drawing from the holster and getting that first shot off quickly and on target.
I feel the skills I learned pertain to all aspects of shooting, and will help me to become a better shooter overall. They made me feel very comfortable from the beginning and I had a great time! I would actually take this class again to reinforce what I just learned, and would love forth to offer some other classes to choose from to broaden my horizons … keep up the good work.
Felt very confident implementing everything I learned
Ok, so I waited to complete this survey until after I did my dryfire drills and then went to the range to test my skills. Major difference. Felt very confident implementing everything I learned and it did make a difference for me in how I shot. Much faster and accurate follow up shots which was the major weakness in my shooting. Looking forward to further honing my shooting skills. Thanks again for a great class Jerry and Harold!
The primary focus and content were spot on
Practical Fundamentals — great class! Both Jerry and HR made for a great contrasting instructional team. The primary focus and content were spot on and I am certain that with more work and time, will allow me to advance further and faster than had I not taken this course. I have had several other courses, some with big names. This one speaks to the core of one’s ability to place your rounds as desired, and is ‘fundamental’ to the advancement as a pistol operator. My friend and I had both hit walls regarding advancement, which competition had made clear. This class is going to enable us to break through.
Those who want to really progress, owe it to themselves to take this course. I wish I had taken it earlier.
This class was excellent
I’m a new shooter with less than a year’s worth of experience, and with my limited training I was concerned that I’d be out of my league when the other shooters in the class. While its true that the class had quit a few very experienced shooters, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the concepts and drills that Jerry and his team were teaching were applicable to all the students in the class no matter the skill level or experience. In no time I felt very comfortable shooting shoulder to shoulder with all my fellow students no matter the skill level as we were all learning. This class was excellent.
Constructive criticism and positive feedback
Jerry and Harold were excellent instructors. You provided constructive criticism and positive feedback to individual shooters throughout the class. The techniques taught in Practical Fundamentals provide a shooter with the building blocks necessary to become a better shooter. Thanks.
World class, hands-on instruction
Practical Fundamentals training in Richmond was by far the best firearms training I have ever experienced. Jerry and Harold took our class to the next level in two days. Operation Specific Training will give you practical shooting skills and will help you implement trigger control.
The personal, world class, hands on instruction sets this training apart for the rest. If you can only go to one training this year make Practical Fundamentals the one!
Clearly there is something for everyone
As a new shooter, this was one of my first classes, and I was looking for a course that was basic enough for me, but advanced enough that I felt like I was getting a significant value. I couldn’t have been happier with my choice in OpsSpec Training. For two days I stood shoulder to shoulder with shooters that had dozens of years of experience and some that had taken the course multiple times, and I never felt out of place, and neither did they.
Clearly there is something for everyone, and rest assured I’ll be looking for the next OpsSpec course to take!
Highly recommended
Thoroughly 100% professional, safe and very informative. After going through the class, I understand why some folks feel inclined to take it more than once. Highly recommended.
Great class for even seasoned shooters
Bruce and Doug did an excellent job at the SIG Academy. As a NRA Basic Pistol, Rifle and Reloading instructor I will use my obtained knowledge to help new to shooting students progress in the shooting sports. Great class for even seasoned shooters. Competition and Tactical technique drills well received by all students.
Practical Fundamentals was a fantastic class
Practical Fundamentals was a fantastic class, and Bruce, Doug and Steve were amazing instructors. Definitely interested in taking both Practical Fundamentals and other OpSpec offerings in the future. Keep up the great work.
Excellent training techniques and very professional
Excellent training techniques and very professional staff at this Practical Fundamentals session! I should have done this years ago, as it provides essential building blocks and has proven techniques which demonstrate positive and satisfying results.
I would recommend this session to anyone who wants to advance their skills and move to the next level of marksmanship and performance.
The [OpSpec Training] organization has spent a great deal of time and energy in preparation for these sessions, and continues to refine the course as new techniques become available.
Practical Fundamentals is your class!
If you no longer consider yourself a beginner, you find that great gear only takes you so far, and you really want to learn to shoot well, Practical Fundamentals is your class! The focus on marksmanship [and] this class fills all the holes left by other classes that focus on defense. The instructors made us amaze ourselves!
The singular best pistol class I’ve ever taken
The singular best pistol class I’ve ever taken. The process oriented, rather than results orientated focus ended up making a huge difference in my ability to deliver tight groups on target quickly.
Exactly what I needed…
I have taken a few firearms instruction courses in the past. I now wish I had never taken them and had only taken Jerry’s courses. I have a lot of bad habits that I need to break in order to truly improve as a shooter. Jerry gave me knowledge on exactly what I needed to complete my skills on a daily basis. I very much look forward to taking more of his classes in the near future.
The experience was first-rate in every regard
MOAC 2016 offered outstanding opportunity to learn in an immersive environment. Operation Specific Training left no stones unturned and the only complaint was time passed too darn fast!
Jerry Jones and Bruce Gray exuded mastery in teaching all of us skills, and where we fell short, a clear path for further training was succinctly outlined to guide us to success. After all, there’s always substantial room for improvement.
Jerry dissected grip and trigger management peerlessly and Bruce added subsequent insights founded upon decades of competitive shooting and analysis. Also, two “assistant” (a gross understatement!) coaches, provided constant monitoring throughout each evolution. Furthermore, if anyone desired individual attention regarding a “glitch or hitch” in technique, video assistance and immediate follow-up was provided.
One exercise which is seared into my memory was when my proverbial wheels came off. The drill was conducted on day five following 32+ hours of instruction: the direction was “GO FAST!”
I must predicate this with the safety protocols of all Operation Specific Training: safety is paramount and non-negotiable! If any student observes an unsafe act, they are to call STOP! At such time, the line freezes and the condition is evaluated. Also, safety standards are scrutinized twice daily: first morning and after lunch.
In the aforementioned drill, students were encouraged to push the envelope regarding safely drawing and firing. After several magazines, I was deeply frustrated with my performance; however, I reflected on one salient point: my frustration was due to my inability to consistently achieve a “best” grip at speed. Why did it frustrate me so much and how did I know this? It was due to Jerry’s dissection of the minutiae of the draw and shooting stroke – BINGO – it was seared into memory! Afterwards, one of the astute “coaches” dissected trigger preparation using an ingenious simple formula that was akin to a lightning bolt of learning. I shall forego the details as everyone deserves to experience such revelations from the source.
In summary, from arrival to departure, the experience was first-rate in every regard. Operation Specific carefully selects their hosts to ensure a seamless transition for all who travel for their training.
The best firearms training I have received to date, hands down!
This class, as expected, was outstanding and really immersed me into learning my trigger and how to use it in a way I never had before. The high round count took the concepts and cemented them. This class gave me so much to practice and work on this next year before I take my next OpSpec class.
I have had a lot of firearms training from various places in the past. I can honestly say if you have even considered getting good training would be a fool to not highly consider an OpSpec class. OpSpec Training offers the best firearms training I have received to date, hands down!
Very effective coaching by the multiple instructors
MOAC is an excellent training course that I would highly recommend to others that are looking to elevate their shooting skills to a whole new level entirely. Effectively engaging targets using high round counts in a safe manner is part and parcel for this course. Being made aware of my shooting skill deficiencies and then training through those changes needed to become a better shooter was a great outcome. One attending MOAC can certainly appreciate the very effective coaching by the multiple instructors that are present. Job well done…
Far and away the best training I have ever had anywhere
After attending MOAC 2015 in New Hampshire, I had high expectations for MOAC 2016 in Arizona. I wasn’t even close. The class was far above and beyond. Many new things learned, great instruction to get the information across, and many repetitions at various distances to really groove things in. Far and away the best training I have ever had anywhere.
I left the range each day with a smile on my face
If you want to learn to shoot fast and accurately this is the class for you. There are plenty of other classes available where you can make a lot of noise and spend a lot of hard-earned money, but none that explains in detail how to go fast and then practices each of the steps required for success. The class was challenging but I left the range each day with a smile on my face.
Their methods of instruction are solid and to the point
If you want to learn how to shoot and accurate then the MOAC is for you! The instructors are great and their methods of instruction are solid and to the point. The high round count of saturation training will make you a better shooter. Bring a speedloader!
Perfect follow on to Practical Fundamentals
Excellent class. Perfect follow on to Practical Fundamentals I took over a year ago. Time between classes gave me enough time to absorb and incorporate PF techniques, allowing me to concentrate on APM material. Instructors Jerry and Ray were excellent, giving accurate and timely feedback. Appreciate their organizational skills to keep schedule, approachability, and good sense of humor.
Helps you realize how much better you can become
It is amazing what difference a day makes!. You start off in the morning shooting so-so, and by the afternoon you are (almost) an expert. No matter how much you think you know, taking the class helps you realize how much better you can become.
Truly an outstanding class
Truly an outstanding class that I would recommend to anyone interested in perfecting their skills and discipline in handgun marksmanship. The instructors use real world examples and teach practical, repeatable skills that will yield dividends for may years to come.
I’m saving tremendous amounts of money by not wasting ammo
I have taken several pistol training classes from Operation Specific, and I learn a tremendous amount each time. Prior to this class, when practicing at the range, I was mostly burning through ammo and getting nowhere. Not only are my skills progressing well, but I am saving tremendous amounts of money by not wasting ammo with little learned.
An excellent class
An excellent class for learning, understanding, and practicing the fundamentals of pistol usage and control in various scenarios.
Jerry is an excellent instructor
Jerry is an excellent instructor. Great feed back and communication.
Exactly what I needed
I thought the class was excellent and was exactly what I needed. The sheer repetition really taught me to focus on the sight picture. At the end of the class I understood and knew what it was like when everything came together. I’m definitely not “there” yet, however I do understand what it looks and feels like when everything comes together. Equally important I also know what I need to do to continue to improve.
I also though the instructor was excellent. He was really good at offering suggestions for improvement, but also knew when to back off. Sometimes, as a student, you need to figure things out on your own, and he walked that fine line well.
I understand safety is a big concern anytime firearms are used, and this goes for students as well as the instructor. Having never taken a class from OpSpec I have a legitimate concern that I will feel and be safe during the class. I thought safety was handled at the appropriate level for the class and at no time did I ever feel safety was lacking or I was in an unsafe environment.
One simply could not ask more!
Just completed my second class with Mr. Jerry Jones, and once again, I enjoyed a formidable learning experience.
Truly, Mr. Jones is the rare instructor who is consummately committed on his students’ learning and development. He espouses process oriented marksmanship and will dissect each component so the process is both understood and safely executed. One simply could not ask more!
Practical Fundamentals is a must do class
Great class. Can take the class several times and still gain significant amount of new information.
Practical Fundamentals is a must do class for those wishing to be more accurate, better shooters. Need to practice the bump drill daily to perfect trigger preparation.
He did not disappoint
I took the class to benefit from Bruce’s teaching. He did not disappoint. I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to benefit from his insights. I say that as one who has had the opportunity to learn from a number of instructors, including: Gunsite (Ed Stock), Hackathorn (Ron Avery) and briefly, Ayoob. Were I able only to get further instruction from one person, I would choose Bruce.
This class could easily be described as life-changing
Although this was presented as a more advanced class, the fundamentals of trigger control and the reasons for it have benefited me immeasurably. I wish I’d encountered such instruction years ago as I would be a better shooter today. I know that in a year (yes, I’ll keep practicing the Bump Drill) my shooting will be markedly improved over how it was prior to my entering the class.
The view towards shooting, detaching myself from the result, resounds with other recommendations I’ve heard in life. My too brief two days in this class reinforced lessons I will take to other events and activities. Although this next statement could be described as hyperbolic, I’ll stand by my impression as, for a dedicated shooter, this class could easily be described as life-changing.
Excellent experience, start to finish
By far the best
Of the over 100 classes, workshops, training seminars, etc, I have attended in both my personal and professional life, this has been by far the best. The amount of actual useable knowledge I obtained in this class far exceeded my expectation. I am looking forward to my next training class!
The class was very valuable
Overall I thought the class was very valuable and the instructors, facilities, etc. were very good. The instructors took time after class to work with students and answer their questions.
Flawless!
I don’t think anyone can top this level of instruction it was flawless!
Take the time to refocus on the fundamentals
If you take your firearms training serious and want to take your skills to the next level, I highly recommend taking the practical fundamentals course. Far too often we rely on the newest wazoo equipment or trigger job to shoot better when in reality we need to bring it back and focus on the fundamentals. Proficiency with a firearm is a perishable skill and we all need to take the time to refocus on the fundamentals of good marksmanship. Don’t let your ego cloud get the best of you. Be safe, train hard and God bless.
Excellent baseline of fundamental pistol skills
This class provided an excellent baseline of fundamental pistol skills from which to build an effective personal training regime.
Training done right!
Training done right! Read the course information and you won’t be disappointed. Jerry Jones is as good an instructor as I have encountered during weapons training. He will provide you the roadmap and you just need to execute. He was helpful to students and did not belittle them when having troubles. I say it again you will not be disappointed!
The building blocks needed for quick and accurate shooting
The instruction I received in this class is the building blocks needed for quick and accurate shooting. Safety is stressed as the most important thing and no rounds went down-range without a lesson attached to them.
I really appreciated the personal attention and instruction
As a ‘distinguished senior’ who is relatively new to IDPA and USPSA, I came away with specific practice activities/routines which I’m confident will improve my performance. I really appreciated the personal attention and instruction that each of us received.
All of the instructors were professional
Practical Fundamentals was the best class for me at this stage in my development as an IDPA/USPSA shooter. All of the instructors were professional and have a wealth of knowledge and practical experience that they shared with their students. I firmly believe that if I practice their techniques and drills I will move up at least one classification.
I got a lot more out of it the second time around
This was my second Practical Fundamentals Class. I believe that I got a lot more out of it the second time around. I would highly recommend this class to any shooter at any level. Lots of one on one instruction. Thanks for a great experience!
I have gained a lot of great tools
Excellent class. I feel like I have gained a lot of great tools to help me become a better shooter. I am new to the sport and Bruce, Harold and Steve took the time to make me feel at ease and gave me a lot of great tips for improving my skills.
Great mix of instructors
Bruce and staff are excellent! Great mix of instructors that bring real world experience to the course.
Class was taught in an extremely safe manner
I learned a tremendous amount, and understand what I have to work on. The class was taught in an extremely safe manner. The instructors were excellent.
I learned a lot about where I’m at with my own shooting
Advanced Competition Pistol was one of the toughest classes I’ve ever taken, not only due to the round count and challenging drills and targets, but because of how much self-examination of the shooter’s ego and motivations was involved through detailed lectures and question/answer sessions. I learned a lot about where I’m at with my own shooting, what I can get better at, and more importantly, how to continue forging ahead with improvement. I’d recommend this class to any competitive shooter who’s trying to break through plateaus or keep moving up in skill level.
Take your shooting to another level
This was an excellent class for those who want to move beyond the basic fundamentals of shooting to understand how the body and mind implement the mechanical actions. Take your shooting to another level by learning how to use the subconscious part of the mind to link your training to your match performance.
Any class with Bruce is a great class!
Any class with Bruce is a great class! He explains his thought process and philosophy of shooting in a truly engaging and approachable way.
The lecture portion of the class was worth the price of the class
The lecture portion of the class was worth the price of the class. I would like to see a book with this material described in detail. As a matter of fact, a split book on competition and tactical shooting by OpSpec Training would be awesome. A perfect combination. The hospitality of the range was great. I would like to see some OpSpec apparel and perhaps a manual to accompany the classes. Looking forward to more classes.
5 stars!
I very much enjoyed the class and I would recommend your class to anyone who wants to be challenged, is teachable, and wants to move to a higher level of training and understanding. This is the second class that I’ve taken taught by the duo Jerry and Bruce. 5 stars!
I shot more Alphas and hit the steel more consistently
I am a USPSA Master class shooter and I hit a plateau for the last six months that I have been struggling to overcome. Bruce was fantastic with his explanation of the Bump Drill and trigger manipulation. In the class, I shot more alphas and hit the steel more consistently than ever. I would definitely recommend this class to everyone I see. I also look forward to taking it again.
Excellent training for intermediate to professional shooters
One of the best three days of pistol training I have ever spent. This course is a must for those that want to really sharpen their marksman skills, and learn how to drive the gun hard. Very organized curriculum with excellent instruction and real world experience. Not for beginners but excellent training for intermediate to professional shooters. Look forward to attending again next year.
Every law enforcement officer would be well served by taking these classes
I have been working in law enforcement for twenty years. I learned techniques and other shooting skills I would have never thought possible. I would rate this class and the instructors with an A+. They cared about what they were teaching and the students progress. I think every law enforcement officer would be well served by taking pistol fundamentals and the advanced pistol operator class.
They didn’t let me down
I had asked Jerry and Ray to get on me about things I was doing wrong, no matter how small they were. They didn’t let me down.
This basic foundation is something that can’t be overemphasized
Jerry was fantastic, I really appreciate his direct approach and constructive feedback. Bruce is very analytical in his approach, so they balance well. Ray was great at filling in the gaps and throwing out the occasional verbal confidence booster. I came away from this class with significantly better trigger control and a lot more knowledge on how to improve it going forward. I shoot a lot, but this basic foundation is something that can’t be overemphasized.
I enjoy the learning format
I have attended two OpSpec Training classes and will continue to attend as time and availability allow. I enjoy the learning format and the real world experience that the instructors bring to the classes. The skills I have learned have made me a better and more capable shooter.
I recommend it to other law enforcement trainers
I was introduced to a new shooting technique and through instruction and high repetition I was able to learn and use it well. I’m a better shooter as a result of this course. As a firearms instructor for my Dept. and recruit level in my State I was amazed by the professionalism, knowledge and teaching techniques of both instructors. Watching them I was able to critique myself as an instructor and learn valuable skills to take back with me. This course was a dual learning experience for me and made me a better shooter and instructor. I highly recommend it to Law Enforcement Trainers.
Ample training time with each drill type
… a natural progression of Practical Fundamentals. The high round count provided ample training time with each drill type to work and experience the process of high speed marksmanship. The moments when everything came together completely fulfilled my expectations. The advice given by Jerry and the team was easy to understand and made an immediate improvement on my shooting ability. Bruce provided a detailed insight into the competitive shooting world. When he spoke it was almost as if he was giving away trade secrets.
Absolutely unique and effective
This was simply the most unique and effective training I’ve ever received. Period.
MOAC was very well organized!
MOAC was very well organized. Each day had a specific objective. Progress was closely monitored so it was easy to tell what you had to work more on. The staff/student ratio was really good … course really helped me advance as a shooter. Recommend it highly.
The light came on during the course
Before this course my shooting was inconsistent at best, and sometimes just flat out terrible. The light came on during the course, and my shooting improved dramatically. I’ve made this my pledge: “I will see the sights, I will feel the trigger, I will call my shot.” Thanks for helping me put it all together.
Safety was paramount
The instruction was very very good. Safety was paramount. The drills were sound and used the building block approach. The discussions caused me to change my mind about several ideas about accuracy and speed. My shooting improved in the short time spent in class and with the prescribed practice improvement showed up on the range immediately.
Far exceeded my expectations
This was my first OpSpec class and first time at the SIG SAUER Academy. I very much enjoyed the course and definitely went away with a whole new perspective and a new set of skills and knowledge, as well as a renewed level of confidence. The training methodology and level of expertise far exceeded my expectations.
New skills I feel confident I can bring home
I learned quite a bit from this course and have picked up many new skills that I feel confident that I can practice and develop on my own. Because of the broad range of skill sets taught in this course, I will likely re-take it again in the next year or two.
Questions answered quickly and thoroughly
Jerry and Randy were both great, offering feedback whenever it was needed. Each time I asked a question (a lot), it was answered quickly and very thoroughly.
Focus on the trigger was an eye opener
The instruction was great. The pace was good. I was very happy with the course. The focus of the “trigger” was an eye opener.
Coaching aspect of this class is a valuable tool
The coaching aspect of this class is a valuable tool. Good to see the students take lessons and apply them as a coach to help other shooters.
Safety was important
The degree to which safety was stressed was exceptional and was as important – or perhaps more so – than the instruction in shooting. It’s way too easy to get complacent the more familiar you are with something. The constant reminder by all of the instructors was an excellent reminder that safety must always be considered first.
I’ll take this class again
Knowing that the class was never designed to turn out a polished shooter, I think overall the instructor did a good job of delivering the material in an order that continued to emphasize the previous lesson while layering the next lesson on top. I will likely take this class again…
Friendly and approachable
The class was extremely well put together, the instructors were friendly and approachable, and the pace was spot on to cover the material. I learned more than I had hoped and look forward to taking more classes in the future.
